About this Event

Description

This session is designed for researchers with no prior coding experience. We will cover essential principles and strategies for navigating and working with code, using the popular programming language Python. Participants will utilise the Jupyter Notebooks platform to learn how to analyse texts. This will give participants a solid foundation in the basics of coding for Humanities research. The software we will use is free to download, compatible with most computers, and we will offer support with installation and setup before the session.

Speaker

Dr Estara Arrant is a Postdoctoral Research Associate based at the Cambridge University Library in the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit. She is a Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellow on the project, "Regaining Lost Realities: Medieval Judaeo-Arabic and the Society that Shaped It", in which she is furthering some of the first NLP technology on medieval Judaeo-Arabic and designing data mining techniques to connect language to sociological realities reflected in the material culture of historical documents.

Dr Arrant is a linguist specialising in Semitic languages, a data scientist, palaeographer, and scholar of Middle Eastern studies. She employs data science, applied mathematics, and computational tools to address longstanding issues and develop new approaches in the linguistic, religious, and historical research of Middle Eastern languages and cultural methods for advice.
