Discover Thatcher’s Britain (1979–1990): a bold decade of reform, conflict, and change that shaped the nation we know today.
About this Event

The years of Margaret Thatcher’s leadership marked a decisive turning point in British politics and society. Her policies of market liberalization, weakening trade unions, promoting privatization, and implementing fiscal restraint reshaped the country’s economy and social fabric. At the same time, her strong leadership style and firm stance in international affairs made her a figure of both admiration and controversy. This course will guide you through this transformative decade to understand how the “Iron Lady” shaped modern Britain.

This course will be led by Dr. Alexandre Loktionov, a distinguished scholar with profound academic expertise. He is currently a Research Fellow at Christ’s College, as well as a Research Fellow at the McDonald Institute for Archaeological Research and the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies at HSE University in Russia.

In the course, Dr. Alex will lead us to explore and reflect on:

  • Did Thatcher’s economic reforms revitalize Britain or deepen inequality?
  • What role does “strong leadership” play in shaping a nation, and what trade-offs does it involve?
  • In what ways does the legacy of Thatcher’s policies still affect Britain today?

Join us to explore “The Thatcher Years,” reflecting on this pivotal chapter in British history and uncovering the lessons it continues to influence the present world.
