First Baptist Church Georgetown — 164th Anniversary Community History Walk
About this Event
Step into the streets of Georgetown and walk the ground that holds 164 years of faith, freedom, and resilience.
First Baptist Church Georgetown invites the community to join its Annual Community History Walk — a living tribute to the men, women, and children who built one of Washington, DC's most historic African American neighborhoods, brick by brick and prayer by prayer.
The walk begins at 9:00 AM in front of First Baptist Church at 27th & Dumbarton Street NW — a congregation that has stood as a spiritual anchor in Georgetown since 1862. From there, we trace a path through the historic streets of what was once Black Georgetown toward one of the most sacred and significant sites in the District.
Our Destination: Mt. Zion & Female Union Band Society Cemetery
Mt. Zion Cemetery is the oldest Black cemetery in Washington, DC, serving as the final resting place for free and enslaved Black persons beginning in 1808. These burial grounds are the resting place of enslaved and freed Black persons, their descendants, and historians believe the cemeteries served as an extension of the nearby Black community of Georgetown for enslaved persons seeking freedom via the Underground Railroad. locMt Zion-FUBSCemetery
Mount Zion Cemetery is one of the few remaining physical reminders of the significant contributions of Black people to the development of Georgetown. Both cemeteries have been listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior. Mt Zion-FUBSCemeteryDC Historic Sites
