Fireflies produce a chemical reaction inside their bodies that allows them to light up in a process known as bioluminescence. But WHY do they do it?
Most spiders have eight eyes. In some species four of those eyes have a reflective layer behind their retinas, called a tapetum. But WHAT makes them reflective?!
WHAT birds can we see at night that aren't active during the day?
Participants will learn about the frogs and toads that frequent Wayne's Pond at the park and serenade hikers especially at sunset and early evening.
Seven Islands staff will answer these mysteries and many more during the Fireflies and Spider Eyes Night Hike. During a 2.5 mile, sunset to dark hike, we will explore the wonders of the park after hours!
The cost of this program is $12.00 per person. We encourage participants to bring water, sturdy hiking shoes, and flashlights. Please meet the park staff that will be the guide at the Bluebird Barn by the main entrance parking lot by 8:45pm. Please note that this program is outside of normal operating hours. Anyone not registered with the program will need to be out of the park by sunset. Any visitors in the park after sunset that are not registered for the program will be considered trespassing and subject to park rule violation citations and penalty fines.
