Finding Joy is a slow-burn psychological thriller filmed entirely in Kansas City. This independent feature has been graced by so many talented artists over the last five years and serves as KC native filmmaker Valeri Bates' directorial debut.
Our story follows Roni Gingrich (Bates), a PTSD survivor and aspiring artist whose buried childhood trauma begins to resurface in the form of sleep paralysis and recurring dreams. When Roni's episodes spiral out of control, her best friend and roommate Trish Collins (Heather Elaine) encourages her to enlist professional help from Sleep Psychologist Dr. Williams (Deborah Madick) and Sleep Technologist Kyle Murphy (Davis DeRock). With the help of Dr. Williams and through her recurrent nightmares, the blurred lines between dreams, reality, and repressed memories become more clear as Roni unravels the truth of her past.
