Join us for a special screening of We Lend a Hand: The Forgotten Story of Ontario Farmerettes, a powerful documentary that brings to light the remarkable story of 40,000 teenage girls who stepped up during the Second World War to work on Canadian farms. Through perseverance, resilience, and determination, these young women played a vital role in sustaining food production during one of the most critical periods in modern history—helping to feed soldiers overseas and civilians facing severe shortages.
Told through the lens of historian and author Bonnie Sitter, and enriched with archival images and reenactments, the film captures both the hardships and the lasting bonds formed by the Farmerettes.
The film itself began with a chance meeting between director Colin Field and Bonnie Sitter, whose passion for preserving this forgotten history sparked the vision for the documentary. After interviewing 20 former Farmerettes and dedicating two years to the project, the film stands as a powerful tribute to their legacy. Bonnie’s journey began years earlier with a single photograph labeled “Farmerettes 1946,” leading to the co-creation of the book Onion Skins and Peach Fuzz: Memories of Ontario Farmerettes alongside former Farmerette and journalist Shirleyan English.
This event is proudly hosted as a fundraiser for The Farmworker Hub NOTL, supporting ongoing efforts to provide community, connection, and essential services for farmworkers in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
