About this Event
The Feminist Movie Monday co-organiser Emily Hoyle will introduce the film. Emily is a PhD researcher in the sociology department at Lancaster University. Her research theorises a way to understand transhumanism as imaginaries, brought into being by discourses, practices, bodies and technologies. Transhumanist imaginaries are collective imaginings of a future that will have the technoscientific capabilities for humans to live longer through the ‘enhancement’ or total transcendence of their fleshy body. With an interest in and understanding of the cultures of the tech elite, Emily will bring her perspective to the film.
About the film
When tech billionaire Slater King meets cocktail waitress Frida at his fundraising gala, he invites her to join him and his friends for a dream vacation on his private island. Wild nights soon blend into sun-soaked days, but when strange things start to happen, Frida must uncover the truth if she hopes to make it out alive.
"It’s wildly entertaining – a sharp-witted genre movie that combines the clued-in messaging of Jordan Peele’s Get Out with a touch of the skin-prickling unease of Alex Garland’s Men."
The Guardian
The event is free to attend but if you would like to contribute a cash donation towards the running costs of Feminist Movie Monday there will be an opportunity on the night. We ask everyone in attendance to respect one another, the organisers, and the Gregson Centre volunteers.
