Film Screening Event: Sisters of ' 77
About this Event
Mark your calendars for September 9th! The Center for Public History is hosting another film screening event!
Join the Center for Public History and the Sharing Stories from 1977 project for our latest film screening event! On September 9th we'll be showing Sisters of '77, a 2005 documentary on the National Women's Conference. This event will also include a discussion after the film with director Cynthia Mondell, whose other works have garnered permanent exhibition at the Women's Museum in Dallas, a Gracie Award, a Women in Film’s Topaz Achievement Award, and even an Emmy nomination.
Cynthia Salzman Mondell has been making films since the 1970s, when her Promise and Practice documentary first aired, which tackled Dallas housing discrimination. Shortly after her debut film, she and her husband Allen Mondell formed Media Projects Inc., and they have been making films together ever since. Mondell's work concentrates on American women and social issues, though she has also produced with her husband a series of films on President John F. Kennedy for the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. Currently, she has two documentaries in the works: In Her Shoes, a film on incarcerated women, and Sole Sisters, which explores identity via shoes.

The National Women's Conference, which occurred from November 18-21, 1977, was the first and only of its kind: a federally funded event, ordered by President Gerald Ford, meant to find out "what women want." Mondell herself attended the event, acting as one of many relay runners carrying a symbolic torch from Seneca Falls, New York, the site of the 1848 women's rights convention, to Houston, where the NWC was held.
Sisters of '77, weaves together footage from the conference itself with more recent interviews from its participants, chronicling events from 1977 while also looking to the future for American women.
The Center for Public History and the Sharing Stories from 1977 project are proud to host a UH campus screening of Sisters of '77 and bring greater public awareness about the individuals and the historical context of the 1977 National Women's Conference. Sharing Stories is currently engaged in publishing the biographies of each elected delegate and alternate who attended the conference, conducting oral histories with former conference participants, and building an original searchable demographic database about the participants. Much of this work will be published in conjunction with the NWC's fiftieth anniversary in 2027.
