Join the Calgary Peoples’ Assembly on November 15 for a double-header screening of two resistance films: Concerning Violence and Paradise Now!
Concerning Violence: Nine Scenes from the Anti-Imperialistic Self-Defense (2014)
Runtime: 1h30m
Based on the chapter “Concerning Violence” from Frantz Fanon’s 1961 book The Wretched of the Earth and narrated by American singer and actress Lauryn Hill, this film recounts the events of African nationalist and independence movements in the 1960s and 1970s which challenged colonial and white minority rule.
Paradise Now (2005)
Runtime: 1h31m
Directed by Palestinian-Dutch filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad, Paradise Now is a drama thriller that tells the story of two Palestinian men living under occupation who volunteer to carry out a suicide attack in Israel. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film and received an Academy Award nomination in the same category.
We will be screening these two films at the Signal Hill Library Program Room on Sunday November 15 from 1pm-4:30pm. There will be a short break between the films, and light refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you there!
