How do cities transform from a car-centric to a bike-centric reality?
How did the Dutch start transforming and realizing a bike-centric Netherlands? What takeaways from the Dutch experience can Egyptians possibly learn and adapt to their own context? Is it a prerequisite to have a cycling infrastructure so that more people can cycle?
Join us next Sunday at the NVIC library to watch the Dutch documentary "Together We Cycle" and discuss these questions collectively. The screening is organized by Tabdeel collective of Egyptian urban planners and cycling advocates.
📅 Sunday, Feb 1st
⏰ 6PM - 9PM

If you are a sociologist, urban planner, community leader, or just interested in the future of active mobility in Egypt, then the screening will definitely spark something in you!
𝙏𝙤𝙜𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙒𝙚 𝘾𝙮𝙘𝙡𝙚: A documentary by Arne Gielen & Gertjan Hulster | 2020 | 70 min | In Dutch with Arabic Subtitles
The documentary investigates the many factors, events, and circumstances that have led to the current Dutch cycling culture. Contrary to popular belief, the Netherlands -just like Egypt among others - also followed the global trend of the 1970s that centered the car in urban development, until, against all odds, the transition happened in the Dutch culture and streets! What sparked this transition?
This screening in Cairo is part of Tabdeel’s current film screenings program, which kicked off in Portsaid this month to discuss a key question in active mobility: "Which came first: the chicken or the egg? Should cycling culture come first, or does infrastructure lead the way?”. Through stories of grassroots organizations and collective action in the Netherlands, the documentary shows how people and cities shape each other.
The screening will be followed by a collective discussion in Arabic and reflection on urban cycling in Egypt.
/// Please note that our library has limited seating and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 5:30PM and the screening starts at 6:00 PM or earlier in case the space reaches its full capacity. Thank you for understanding and see you on Sunday!///
