About Andy Hughes:
Andy Hughes is an internationally recognized artist and photographer, known for his work on sustainability and pollution. As the first artist-in-residence at Tate Gallery St. Ives, Hughes has spent over 30 years collaborating with scientists, curators, NGOs, and communities to explore our relationship with plastic and environmental issues.
Keynote speaker
His recent projects transcend the usual narrative of "raising awareness" about ocean pollution, instead delving into themes of weirdness, and magic, and drawing on the philosophy of Timothy Morton. Hughes has been a keynote speaker at prominent events like The Future of Sustainability and IPA EFF Week, and in 2023, he presented at Notpla, a 2022 Earthshot Prize winner.
Tackling environmental challenges through art
His global involvement includes symposia, panels, and workshops with schools, universities, and organisations such as Plastic Free Jeju, Surfers Against Sewage, and the Sustainable Earth Institute, reinforcing his deep commitment to tackling environmental challenges through art. In 2022 he lived and worked for six months as an artist in residence on the world's first carbon-neutral Island of Gapado in South Korea.
