The Bicycle Thieves (1948), directed by famed actor/director Vittorio De Sica, is undeniably one of the masterpieces of Italian and international cinema, a film that catapulted Italian Neorealism to the world stage. Set in Rome during the economically depressed Postwar period (late 1940s), the film focuses on the struggles of Antonio Ricci and his family. Antonio’s first day at work turns out to be bitter-sweet, and forces him and his young son to embark on a search that reveals the inadequacies and indifference of society and its institutions.
