About this Event
*NOTE* we will not be showing explicit and graphic depictions of sexual violence. A majority of the scenes will be around the way child sexual abuse is talked about and responded to. Any more graphic depictions will be mentioned before each scene is shown.
How is the topic of childhood sexual abuse handled in popular medical dramas? In what way are disclosures, and survivors, depicted within hospital settings?
The Secrets Worth Screening series is a film club where a child sexual abuse survivor (Sophia Luu) is joined by a co-host to review scenes of child sexual abuse in films & tv shows. For this event, Sophia is joined by doctor, researcher and content creator — Dr Amber Savary-Trathen.
At this event we will explore the ways that childhood sexual abuse are depicted and handled in the following medical dramas:
- Casualty: Storm Damage
- The Pitt
- House
Snacks will be included in the ticket price. (think popcorn, chocolate, fruit... the stuff you try to sneak into a cinema).
Please arrive on time as we will be discussing child sexual abuse and want to create a comfortable and disruption-free environment for everyone.
Please note: There will be a videographer filming the event, but ONLY the hosts will be filmed (so please don't worry about appearing on camera). At the beginning of the event, we will ask you if you are comfortable for your voice to be recorded if you ask a question, but will also provide anonymous options.
This event is hosted by Secrets Worth Sharing, a podcast, video and event platform encouraging conversations around childhood sexual abuse with 'serious joy'.
