Stephen Frears is one of Britain’s most renowned filmmakers and has received numerous BAFTA nominations. He has directed, and occasionally produced, a wealth of acclaimed films and TV series’, many based on real life events and people. They include The Queen, starring Helen Mirren, Philomena, which stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Dangerous Liaisons, with an all-star cast, and My Beautiful Laundrette, featuring Daniel Day-Lewis’s first major film role. His first feature for the cinema, Gumshoe, was released nearly 55 years-ago, in late 1971.
Stephen’s work for the small screen has included The Deal, based on Tony Blair and Gordon Brown’s leadership pact, early episodes of the seventies’ children’s series Follyfoot, the BBC’s Play for Today and State of the Union, written by Nick Hornby. He also directed the mini-series’ A Very English Scandal, based on the MP Jeremy Thorpe and the attempted murder of his gay lover, Quiz, about Charles Ingram’s fraudulent win on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, and Sky’s The Regime, a story of corruption, with Kate Winslet in the lead role.
His early career saw him stage managing the Footlights Revue in 1963, while at Cambridge University. Upon graduating, he worked as an assistant director for film and an actor for TV. Stephen gained recognition in the mid-eighties, for directing feature films such as My Beautiful Laundrette and The Hit, which starred John Hurt, Terence Stamp and Tim Roth. Later that decade, he directed Dangerous Liaisons, the seven-time Oscar-nominated period drama, followed by Prick Up Your Ears, based on playwright Joe Orton’s relationship with Kenneth Halliwell. His later work included directing a string of many other acclaimed films, such as High Fidelity, Dirty Pretty Things, Mrs. Henderson Presents, The Queen and Philomena.
