About this Event
Film and the Archive: Screening & Talk with Heather Norris Nicholson
Join Heather Norris Nicholson for a talk exploring how film archives can help us understand place, identity and social change over time.
The session will include short clips from three locally made films, preserved by the Yorkshire Film Archive and featured in the Stories in Motion exhibition. Alongside viewing and discussion, the event will open out into a wider conversation about film, archives and the stories that moving image records can tell us about everyday life.
The films provide an opportunity to consider how archival films can offer valuable insights into communities, local histories and changing ways of life, while also prompting reflection on what is preserved, how stories are framed, and why film matters as a record of place.
This event is open to anyone with an interest in film, archives and how moving image can help us think about place.
Heather Norris Nicholson has written and taught on different aspects of film over many years, among other interests. She has contributed significantly to research on amateur film, with particular interest in personal storytelling, archiving and interpretation. She is currently working on amateur travelogues.
Heather is an editorial board member of the Oral History Journal and holds an honorary position at the University of Huddersfield. Collaborations with voluntary groups and local organisations include Discover Huddersfield, Springwood’s Windrush Anniversary.
