Event 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM | Film & Real-Time Virtual Conversation with Deeyah Khan
In the spirit of America 250 and the celebration of our democracy, the Peace and Justice Institute, the Ismaili Council, and the Global Peace Film Festival are coming together as partners to host a film screening and dialogue featuring acclaimed filmmaker Deeyah Khan and her documentary White Right: Meeting the Enemy.
As a Muslim woman of color and the daughter of immigrants, Deeyah Khan positions herself directly in front of her ideological opponents who have made death threats to her. Rather than relying solely on condemnation, she attempts human-level engagement, using dialogue to understand what drives radicalization and hatred. The film documents how direct, unflinching engagement can sometimes disrupt rigid hatred, leading a few subjects to re-evaluate their beliefs or leave white supremacist movements entirely.
As our nation commemorates America 250, Khan invites us to reflect on the core practices that sustain a healthy democracy: listening, dignity, courage, belonging, pluralism, and the capacity to remain in relationship across difference.
Following the film, Deeyah will join us LIVE virtually for a discussion.
