FIELD TRIP: Little Big Econ State Forest

Trip/area Description: The forest's name comes from combining the names of the Little Econlockhatchee River and the larger Econlockhatchee River, which come together just south of the forest. The forest has 11.8 miles of hiking trails, including 8.9 miles of the Florida National Scenic Trail. The Brumley Road trail will lead the hiker through a variety of ecosystems such as pine flatwoods, scrub, sandhill and the majestic oak-palm hammocks towards the St. Johns River. The trail provides many scenic views and a chance to see some wildlife.

Duration of trip in hours: 4-5 hours

Walking distance: From 5-6 miles depending on the distance that participants wish to hike.

Degree of difficulty: Easy hike but trail could have wet spots so wear suitable footwear. Bring drinking water, snacks and lunch.

Where you’d like participants to meet: IHOP parking lot at 8800 20th St. in Vero Beach.

Time of meeting: 6:00 a.m.

Number of participants limit (either individuals, or vehicles if a driving tour): 15 people.
