The Victor E. Ferrall, Jr. Endowed Artists-in-Residence Program brings distinguished visual artists to campus to teach, direct workshops, and exhibit their work or work created by collaborating students in an exhibition at the Wright Museum of Art.The program was established in 1998 in honor of the ninth president of Beloit College, Victor E. A native of Chicago and Milwaukee, Tyanna J. Buie earned her BA from Western Illinois University and MFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and is Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in Printmaking at Rhode Island School of Design. Buie’s art explores memory, identity, and modern media through video, printmaking, painting, drawing, collage, and Deep-Fake technology. She was among a select group of artists commissioned to create a permanent public artwork for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Other accolades include the 2012 Mary L. Nohl Fellowship, the Love of Humanity Award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the 2015 Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant, the 2019 Kresge Artist Fellowship, the 2019/2020 Grant Wood Fellowship, the 2020 Fellowship.art award, and the 2023 Ruth Arts/Mary L. Nohl Alumni Award. Committed to community engagement, she has led printmaking workshops nationwide.
Buie has exhibited widely, with solo exhibitions at Freeport Art Museum, South Bend Museum of Art, The Alice Wilds, Materia Gallery, and cam.contemporarie Gallery, and group exhibitions at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Art Museum, RISD’s Chace Center Gallery, the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, and the University of Kentucky Art Museum. She has also participated in residencies at the Joan Mitchell Center, Women’s Studio Workshop, Vermont Studio Center, Project 1612 AIR, and Hotel Pupik. Her work is held in major institutional and private collections internationally and has been featured in Hyperallergic, Essay’d, and New American Paintings.
