Alan Rubel is a professor and former director of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Information School, professor and former director of the Center for Law, Society & Justice, and faculty affiliate in Philosophy, Medical History & Bioethics, and the UW Law School. His research is at the intersection of computational technologies, ethics, and law, including on privacy in education, security, law enforcement, and health, and on algorithmic decision making in a variety of contexts. He received his PhD in Philosophy at UW-Madison and JD from the UW Law School. Prior to joining the faculty at UW, he was a Greenwall Fellow at Johns Hopkins and Georgetown universities and a law clerk to Justice Ann Walsh Bradley on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Before graduate school he spent several years as field technician and ranger in the National Park Service.
Clinton Castro is an assistant professor in the Information School and an affiliate professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with core research interests spanning information ethics and fairness in machine learning. His open-access book, Kantian Ethics and the Attention Economy, contends that individuals hold fundamental moral obligations—both to themselves and to one another—to safeguard personal autonomy against the pervasive threats of digital distraction and manipulation. Extending these philosophical inquiries into everyday learning environments, his current scholarship examines the normative implications of AI tutors in K-12 education and the widespread policy debates surrounding mobile phones in schools. Committed to bridging rigorous theory with real-world impact, Dr. Castro also collaborates closely with data scientists and health researchers on pressing applied challenges. This includes AIM-AHEAD Consortium-funded work analyzing algorithmic bias in opioid use disorder treatment, as well as NSF-backed investigations into Indigenous Data Sovereignty within the context of conservation wildlife biobanking.
