Class Description:
Add a bit of glow to the winter and spring evenings by creating a beautiful wet felted Merino luminary. Each luminary is constructed using soft fine Merino batting (unwoven wool) and the magical wet felting process, which includes soapy water and agitation. This class includes instruction and demonstration of the wet felting technique to create a 3D object, focusing on a thin fiber layout. Also, the addition of embellishments to the wool layout will be addressed. No previous experience is necessary, and each participant will be able to felt, shape, and complete a luminary to take with them at the end of class. Each one will be unique and vary in size. The average size is approximately 6” tall with a 5-6” wide diameter.
-Ages 12+
Preregistration is required – please call 207-236-2239. No Refunds.

Sam Coon is a self-taught fiber artist, and has been making felt since being introduced to both needle felting and wet felting in 2009.
Much of her inspiration is gleaned from the natural environment, particularly patterns, colors, and shapes. From there, various types of items are created including vessels, wall art pieces, sculptures, jewelry, and wearable felted items that are nuno felted. In these art forms, she uses wool fibers that have not been spun or woven, such as Merino or Corriedale. In many instances, fabric, silk and viscose fibers are incorporated to change the textural quality of the felt and for added dimension.
What particularly stands out the most to her, when working with wool to make felt, is that the sculptural qualities of wool are impressive, making creative possibilities seemingly endless.
Along with working in the studio, she also regularly teaches needle and wet felting classes at varying locations and age groups.
This workshop is generously co-sponsored by Camden Riverhouse Hotel.
