In 2025 the Augusta Museum of History will focus the Brown Bag History Lecture Series on collecting oral histories from area families. These family histories will help us as a community preserve legacy, bridge the gap between generations, and give a spotlight to different cultures, histories and stories in our area. Through these lectures and interviews, you, the listener, will gain a unique understanding of Augusta’s past, and be inspired to gather and share your own story with your family and others. Most assuredly recording family histories will enrich your understanding of where you come from and guarantee that your family’s stories are not lost.
Brad Usry of Fat Man's Hospitality Group will be the Guest speaker on February 12th. Brad will share about his father Horace Usry, the Fat Man, and his start with Fat Man's In the 1940’s, turning his father Darnell’s grocery store from the Sanitary Curb Market to Fat Man’s Corner. Brad grew up in the business hanging around Fat Man’s Corner absorbing the business as a kid. After college graduation he jumped full steam ahead managing the grocery store, cafe and assisting at Fat Man’s Forest. He became President of the company in 1987. Brad spearheaded major growth at Fat Man’s Forest and led the expansion of the company with the openings of Cotton Row Cafe, Fat Man’s Riverwalk, and Fat Man’s West.
The Brown Bag History Lecture Series is provided monthly by the Augusta Museum of History and is an ideal lunchtime break for downtown professionals, retirees, and students. The lectures are free to Museum members and $5 for non-members, no registration required. Participants can bring a lunch to enjoy in the Museum Rotunda and the AMH will provide water, hot coffee and a dessert. Lunch can begin as early as 11:30am; the lecture takes place in the History Theater at 12:30pm with a short Q&A following. The recorded sessions will be available on the AMH YouTube channel and shared on social media.
