Meet birding enthusiast, Kathryn Christopher, for an unforgettable bird-watching hike along the scenic Murphy-Chambers Farm trail! As we wander through lush fields and wooded ravines, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Shenandoah River, surrounding mountains, Civil War cannons and earthworks, and one of the historic sites of the John Brown Fort. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for some of Harpers Ferry’s 120 bird species, including the striking pileated woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus), vibrant American goldfinch (Spinus tristis), colorful Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula), and majestic red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus). Whether you're an experienced birdwatcher or a beginner, this hike offers a perfect blend of nature, history, and wildlife!
This 2-mile hike is rated EASY to MODERATE, and the route will take us through fields and wooded ravines to see spectacular views of the Shenandoah River and the surrounding mountains, as well as Civil War cannons and earthworks, and one of the previous locations of the John Brown Fort.
