Join Nanaimo Community Kitchens for a fun, hands-on afternoon of bread making, gardening and creativity at Five Acre Community Park.
We’ll make a delicious focaccia using a combination of sourdough starter and yeast, making it possible to prepare the dough together during the workshop without a long wait for it to rise.
Once our dough is ready, we’ll head into the garden to gather fresh seasonal vegetables and herbs. You’ll use what we harvest to create your own beautiful and edible design on top of your focaccia.
Your focaccia will then go home with you to finish baking in your own oven.
What We’ll Do
- Make a simple focaccia dough using sourdough starter and yeast
- Learn some basic bread-making techniques
- Explore the garden and harvest seasonal ingredients
- Use fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers to create your own focaccia design
- Prepare your focaccia for baking at home
- Take your focaccia dough home to bake and enjoy
No previous bread-making experience is needed. This is a relaxed, hands-on workshop and everyone will make their own focaccia.
What to Bring
Please bring a glass pie plate or similar baking dish to take your focaccia dough home in.
About Five Acre Community Park
The workshop takes place at Five Acre Community Park, a community space owned by the City of Nanaimo and managed by Nanaimo Foodshare.
We’re grateful to Nanaimo Foodshare for providing access to the garden and workshop space and for supporting community food education and gardening programs. Nanaimo Community Kitchens is pleased to use this space to bring people together to learn food skills, connect with the garden and enjoy making food together.
