Join us for Fall Gallery Night and the CLOSING RECEPTION of 'Sizable Cloud' by artist Jay Asp at The Pool Near Southside on Saturday, September 19, from Noon - 9 p.m.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:
"Sizable Cloud" by artist Jay Asp features figurative artwork that explores narratives & traditions (both artistic and hagiographic) that suggest the presence of heroes in our everyday world. Each artwork hints at those stories and serves to challenge and inspire.
The show features oil paintings as well as multimedia installations that center on the concept of illumination. Originally inspired by a painting by Peter Paul Rubens in the permanent collection of the Kimbell Art Museum, the work "Ursula" shines in its three parts, including a billboard-sized portrait and 11,000 maidens. Another larger-than-life, brightly shining installation, "Massey," responds to "The Massey's Rainbow, 2021" by Caya Crum, which is a permanent fixture of the gallery. Composed of both ancient media such as stained glass as well as contemporary lighting, such as commercial signage, this piece is a synecdoche of the show in its entirety: a fusion of the timeless with forms very much of our times; responding to what is, and hinting at what may be.
The viewer may discover abundant allusions to oft-portrayed icons found in museums the world over, and the artist hopes that each is delighted by the recontextualization of these ideas.
MEET THE ARTIST:
Jay Asp is an artist of diverse interests, all united by a singular desire to search for beauty.
Jay originally planned to draw comic books, but found himself studying Graphic Design at Bowling Green State University. After spending time in Chicago, IL & Saint Paul, MN, he found himself in Texas, raising a family & longing to improve the craft of his artistic production. To that end, Jay studied in the atelier of Jonathan Hardesty, opening a new door into the world of oil painting.
Since nothing has ever been a straight line for him, instead of immediately producing art professionally, Jay spent the next two decades teaching art in a public high school — a career he loved. Through those years, he began to explore the world at large, found additional mentors & sources of inspiration, and continued producing art at a snail’s pace. The key to greater productivity came via sketchbooks and painting on location (en plein air). Facing an empty nest, Jay finally took the leap to become a professional artist
Now, Jay uses travel as a means to produce landscape paintings. He splits his studio time between various media, believing that an artist need not be limited to a single mode of production. He enjoys painting the figure, but is compelled by narratives & a host of artistic styles. Jay still enjoys teaching and loves to share what he has learned with anyone who is interested.
