An introductory ethnobotany (human plant uses) walk focusing on the edible, medicinal and material gifts of plants and mushrooms (occurrences depend on rainfall conditions). This is a learning exploration with frequent stops to observe and identify various plant species, including fall bloomers, by using our senses. Observations will be discussed within the context of health, Indigenous life ways, sustainability (restoring urban landscapes) and ethics. This experience is an opportunity to cultivate a more meaningful and memorable relationship with our natural community. We’ll discuss the opportunity to preserve the prehistoric Native American village site known as CA-ORA-556, which occurs on the proposed Orange Hills Regional Park and is eligible for the California Register of Historic Resources. Carry field journal, camera, food and beverage for the journey.
DIFFICULTY: Easy to moderate. Roughly 2.5 miles round-trip with a few hundred of elevation gain (1 steep hill), uneven terrain, mix of sun and shade.
