Join Becka Elliott and Iona May-zing for a day of creative experimentation through mark-making and clowning around. Using a range of resources and mediums, Becka will encourage you to create abstract images with shape, line, and colour. Using movement, games and a variety of hats, Iona will encourage you to clown by playfully exploring your responses in given situations. You will weave between these two creative forms of expression throughout the day. All responses are personal and unique, so let's fail joyfully together!
With a big emphasis on the importance of looking after yourself and responding in the present, we will support you in being guided by your physical and emotional experiences to engage as much or as little as you want to. Group size will be limited to twelve to make a comfortable play space.

Who is this workshop for?
Anyone over the age of 18 who wants to give it a go! This could be because you're curious about being creative through clowning and art, because you want a chance to be silly, because you want to bring more play into your professional work or into your life, because you are a performer or artist who is interested in exploring creativity in a different way. There is no previous experience required.
Some spaces may be available at a reduced rate. If cost is a barrier for you then please contact Iona via her website (www.clowningaroundworkshops.co.uk/contact-book).

About the facilitators
Becka Elliott (she/her)
I am a qualified teacher and artist with many years experience writing and delivering workshops in a range mediums to people of all ages and abilities. With a particular interest in abstract expressionism (especially the work of Kandinsky), I am fascinated by the connections that form between sound, words, movement, colour, line, and shape. Having taught drawing in a variety of settings, I am also keen to dispel the 'I can't...' belief.
In stark contrast, my own work, which is predominantly mosaic, is incredibly detailed, precise, and mostly figurative. It is, however, inspired by the shapes and colours of the materials used (instagram.com/rooted_mosaics/).
In recent years I have become very interested in Buddhist philosophy with its focus on creativity and being in the present. This informs my approach to facilitation and my own daily practice.

Iona May-zing (she/her)
I have been learning about clowning for over ten years and have been facilitating Clowning Around since 2023. I like to provide opportunities for participants to have a go at being themselves, in front of an audience, and without a plan. I am always delighted to see the stories that emerge from playfulness, as if by magic!
Clowning forms a big part of my writing practice too. My poetry collection, 'Breaking Down Loudly' (Verve Poetry Press), uses clowning to talk about grief, family, and friendship and I launched this collection by performing a one-woman show based on my poems.
In another part of my life, I have been a teacher in Primary and Secondary Schools. Here, I learnt a lot about playfulness, storytelling and providing a space where people are brave enough to 'give it a go' (and often enjoy themselves in the process!). I am currently building on these skills through completing my Clowning Facilitation Training with Nose-to-Nose.
