About this Event

Fab Lab Summer Camp: Build Your Own 3D Printer
at Lake Michigan College

Ever wondered how a 3D printer actually works? In this immersive, hands-on summer camp, you won’t just use a 3D printer—you’ll build one from the ground up and take it home.

Each family group begins with a complete 3D printer kit, included with registration. Over the course of two exciting days, you’ll assemble your printer step by step while learning how every component—motors, belts, electronics, hotend, and frame—works together to turn digital designs into real objects. By understanding the “why” behind each part, you’ll gain the confidence to troubleshoot, repair, and upgrade your printer long after the camp ends. Please make sure that one of the member of your group is an adult, and also limited to three members in your group.

This workshop runs two days, two hours per day, with guided instruction from Fab Lab staff. By the end of day two, you’ll power up, calibrate, and test your fully functioning 3D printer using the included 1kg roll of PLA filament.

But the learning doesn’t stop at hardware. Campers will also be introduced to the digital side of 3D printing, including:

  • Exploring online design libraries like Thingiverse
  • An overview of 3D modeling tools such as Fusion 360 and SolidWorks
  • Understanding how digital models become printable files

No prior experience with 3D printing or design software is required—just curiosity, patience, and a willingness to learn.

This camp is ideal for individuals, siblings, or families who want to build together. Registration is per printer kit, not per person, making it a great collaborative experience.

Camp Highlights

  • Build and assemble a complete 3D printer
  • Learn how each component functions and connects
  • Calibrate, test, and print with your own machine
  • Take home your finished 3D printer and filament
  • Gain foundational skills in 3D modeling and printing workflows

Details

  • Duration: 2 days (2 hours per day)
  • Minimum age: 12 (at least one participant per group)
  • No prior experience required
  • Registration closes one week before the workshop to allow for material prep

Leave with more than just a machine—leave with real technical skills, problem-solving confidence, and the ability to keep creating at home.
