About this Event
Have you ever wondered how climate change impacts someone’s everyday life right this moment? For some, climate change is not a feared future development, but an everyday reality. Enter our extended reality (XR) film experience and meet the coastal community of Isla Tibaguin, Bulacan in the Philippines, where global warming and excessive groundwater use are causing cities to sink.
Here, the climate crisis shows up in small but disruptive ways nearly every day. Water rising higher than chairs and tabletops, trash in the streets, feet that never fully dry. Nearly daily flooding reshapes routines, health, and dignity. Invasive and persistent floodwaters dictate how people can move, work, and live.
The Philippines is ranked as one of the top countries most vulnerable to the effects of climate change, yet it contributes less than 0.25% to greenhouse gas emissions, the leading cause of global warming. Coastal communities are on the frontlines of a climate crisis they did little to cause.
Living in Water is a 360/XR experience that places you inside a reality where rising seas quietly interrupt sleep, work, and test survival, day after day. This is the reality of climate change unfolding in slow motion.
“Living in Water” is a new immersive virtual reality project created by Ana P. Santos (Atlantic Fellow for Health Equity in Southeast Asia), brought to life with support from the Atlantic Institute’s XR Lab and in collaboration with the CMB Foundation. Combining 360 film and animation, the experience enables audiences to feel what it is like to live with climate anxiety in daily life in the Philippines.
The experience lasts 45 minutes and screenings are available at 2pm, 2.45pm or 3.30pm.
This event is a collaboration between the XR Lab, Atlantic Institute and the Cheng Kar Shun Digital Hub programme.
