About this Event
Expanding your Lifespan (and Overall Health) as a Law Enforcement Officer
The average life expectancy of a police officer in the United States is twenty-two years less than their civilian counterparts. As a police officer, life expectancy is only 57 years when compared to 78 years in the civilian sector. This however is just the tip of the iceberg.
A newly sworn officer who has just graduated from the police academy is often times in the best physical shape of his or her life. The unideal phenomena of that is, over the next twenty to twenty-five years of their careers, these officers will be at risk of physical illness and emotional trauma based on the experience of having repeated elevated stressors, and having developed accumulative toxic stress (accumulative cortisol acquisition over time, & adrenal spikes). Officers and agencies who are not trained or have the awareness - will be at risk of developing stress induced illnesses and earlier than expected health concerns such as; heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cancer, nervous system challenges, etc. These are In addition to the more ambiguous emotional and social impacts of Toxic Stress.
On this day, we will be providing effective steps that we can take for ourselves to expand our lifespans, our level of effectiveness in our jobs, and increase our quality of life for ourselves - as well as those around us
