For centuries, the ascetic has remained one of the most enduring figures in the Indian subcontinent—seen as mystic, wanderer, teacher, reformer, and at times, a powerful social and political force.
Opening at DAG Mumbai, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒐𝒅𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑨𝒔𝒄𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒄, curated by Gayatri Sinha, traces how this enigmatic figure has been imagined across faiths, traditions, and artistic practices over the last three centuries. Bringing together works from the eighteenth century to the present, the exhibition explores the many ways artists have represented asceticism—from sacred discipline and renunciation to devotion, transformation, and transcendence.
