Drawing on the Luke Him Sau Architectural Collection at the HKU Libraries, The Measure of Shade: Luke Him Sau and Climate-Responsive Architecture in Hong Kong revisits Luke’s post-war architectural work through questions of climate, comfort, modern heritage, and architectural archives. Through plans, sections, photographs, digital mapping, and a series of 1:10 sectional models, the tour will examine five projects: the proposed Central Bank of China Guangzhou Branch, So Uk Estate Blocks P, Q, and R, Ritz Garden Apartments, Repulse Bay Towers, and Fair Wind Residence. Together, these works reveal a range of public and domestic living typologies — from commercial and institutional architecture to public housing, urban apartments, luxury residential towers, and the private house — while showing how Luke’s consistent architectural sensitivity shaped everyday life through deep eaves, balconies, corridors, and screens in response to Hong Kong’s dense, hot, and humid environment. Taking place on the final day of the exhibition, the tour will also feature the second rotation of original archival drawings, offering a different selection from those shown at the opening.

About the Tour Leads:

Eunice Seng is Head of the Department of Architecture and Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong, and the founding principal of SKEW Collaborative, an award-winning architectural and research practice operating across Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The practice has earned the Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award for the Xishuidong Industrial Heritage Retail District in Wuxi and Singapore Institute of Architects Design Awards recognition for the Peirce Hill Villa Extension, alongside Blueprint Awards for the Jia Little Exhibition Center and Wulumuqi Road Roof House.

As an architectural and urban historian, Seng is the author of Resistant City: Histories, Maps, and the Architecture of Development (WSP, 2020). She is a contributing author for the Hong Kong section in the Bloomsbury Global Encyclopaedia of Women in Architecture, 1960-2015. Her current book project, Housing Contingency, investigates mid-twentieth-century composite buildings as archival sites to understand Hong Kong’s urban housing development based on migration, exclusions, and negotiations. Additional research efforts include examining housing design and planning in Singapore as a complex of colonial, postcolonial, and Cold War contingencies and women’s work on modern architecture in Asia. Seng was guest editor of an issue of Ardeth titled Competency, and the co-editor of special issues for Architecture Theory Review and Journal of Architecture, on Cosmopolitanism’s others and Dwelling in Asia respectively.

Alongside her scholarship, Seng has contributed extensively to architectural education, practice, and curatorial work. She served as HKU’s PhD Programme Director from 2015 to 2024, co-directed Singapore Archifest in 2017, and was a curatorial advisor to the Hong Kong exhibition at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale.

Seng holds a PhD in Architectural History from Columbia University, an M.Arch from Princeton University, and a BA(AS) from the National University of Singapore. She is a licensed architect in the Netherlands and a chartered member of RIBA.

Jonathan Yeung is a New York registered architect, partner of YY Projects, and a Lecturer in the Faculty of Architecture at The University of Hong Kong. He has previously taught at THEi and lectured at Kyoto Seika University.

Jonathan is an editor at ArchDaily, where he writes on architecture and the conditions shaping contemporary cities, bringing disciplinary questions into broader public discussion and making architectural discourse more accessible. His work with YY Projects has been exhibited and published internationally, including at the Architectural Institute of Japan Gallery and Druker Design Gallery, and in Shinkenchiku, Gooood, Kalavinka Viewpoints, and Contemporary Living Yearbook 2026. He was a member of the curatorial team for the 2025 Hong Kong Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale.

Previously based in Brooklyn, Jonathan practiced at Toshiko Mori Architect and has also worked with Michael Maltzan Architecture, Sasaki, teamLab, and Sidell Pakravan Architects. He holds a B.A. in Architecture with Highest Honors from the University of California, Berkeley, where he received the Alpha Rho Chi Medal, and a Master in Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He has also studied at the University of Cambridge and Doshisha University in Kyoto.
