We are pleased to announce our first public event in our newly renovated DEG office at the Werkschule in Berlin-Wedding. To mark the beginning of this new chapter, we are opening the solo exhibition 'Borderline' on June 6, featuring paintings by our dear team member Maria Kallau.Maria Kallau’s painting series 'Borderline' explores the ambiguous boundary between vulnerability and aggression by portraying young people challenging it. These depicted gestures look playful, but carry an underlying threat of shame, violence and need for control. Adolescence is a state of transformation heightened by sensitivity. Here, each painting is a fragment of a lesson to be learned: how to touch, submit, withdraw, or resist. The paintings capture the unstable in-between space where instinct and consequence have not yet fully learned to recognise one another, and where identity is shaped through experimentation, uncertainty, and emotional risk. Through photographic references alongside an intuitive painting process with soft colour palettes and quiet visual details, Kallau brings out the psychological weight of the subjects, creating a tension between tenderness and discomfort.
The DEG (German-Estonian Society Berlin e. V.) runs a hybrid cultural and co-working space at the Werkschule in Berlin-Wedding, bringing together productive work, selected arts and cultural formats, and opportunities for exchange, collaboration, and joint projects.
