The circle has long symbolized wholeness, continuity, and eternal return. Yet every cycle contains the possibility of transformation. In his solo exhibition "AT WHAT POINT DOES A CIRCLE BREAK TO FORM A SPIRAL," North Carolina artist Tom Braswell invites viewers to consider the moment when repetition becomes evolution, when continuity gives way to expansion, and when perception opens onto new dimensions of understanding.
Featuring photographs, sculpture and assemblage, conceptual artworks, prints, and installations, the exhibition brings together decades of inquiry into the interconnected realms of science, philosophy, ecology, and visual culture. Braswell's work reflects a lifelong fascination with quantum physics, the fourth dimension of space, Zen thought, pataphysics, art theory, and the complex relationships between nature and the human-altered environment. Through diverse materials and processes, he creates works that challenge conventional ways of seeing while encouraging contemplation of the unseen structures that shape experience.
"AT WHAT POINT DOES A CIRCLE BREAK TO FORM A SPIRAL" offers a compelling survey of Braswell's expansive artistic vision. Moving across mediums and disciplines, the exhibition reveals an artist engaged in an ongoing search for connections between the physical and metaphysical, the visible and invisible, the cyclical and the transformative. The works gathered here suggest that the spiral— a form that both returns and advances—may be an apt metaphor for artistic practice itself: a continual process of revisiting fundamental questions while moving toward new possibilities of meaning.
As visitors encounter these photographs, objects, and installations, they are invited to reflect on their own place within larger systems of change and continuity. In Braswell's universe, every circle contains the potential to become a spiral, and every act of looking becomes an opportunity for discovery.
