Nellie Ashford is a self-taught folk artist from the Charlotte area. Her mixed-media folk art depicts the experiences of Charlotte’s African-American community from the Jim Crow era to contemporary day in the U.S. South. Her work has been featured in a number of special exhibits for many years, including an award winning show at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte, the Delta Arts Center in Winston-Salem, the Gaston County Museum, and the Harvey B. Gantt Center in Charlotte. In 2020, the Arts & Science Council and the Public Art Commission in partnership with the City of Charlotte commissioned a mural from Ashford to be displayed in the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Her work, entitled "Honoring All Teachers" can be seen at Concourse A.
Ms. Ashford will be showcasing and discussing various of her works, and will conduct a Q&A in the cellar kitchen at Historic Rosedale. This event is FREE to the community; audience seating is limited to 30.
