Dear colleagues,You are cordially invited to the Institute’s seminar featuring a talk by Zuzana Sekeráková Búriková, Viera Poláková, and Veronika Valkovičová entitled “Everyday Digital Practices in Romantic Relationships: Care, Trust, and Control.” The presentation draws on a representative survey of the online population in Slovakia (N = 997) as well as in-depth interviews to explore how digital technologies are used in the maintenance of romantic relationships. Inspired by feminist ethics of care, the talk focuses on practices that are commonly perceived as expressions of love, care, and trust, yet may simultaneously function as forms of technologically mediated control or violence. Particular attention is given to the sharing of access to a partner’s devices or applications and the use of location-tracking tools. Adopting a processual and situational perspective, the presentation examines how these practices are embedded in everyday relational dynamics, why partners engage in them, and how they relate to individuals’ evaluations of their relationships and broader understandings of intimacy in the digital era.
