About Random Rab:
Random Rab (born Rab Clinton) is a Colorado-based electronic music producer and multi-instrumentalist with a career spanning more than two decades. Often hailed as “a luminary of the West Coast’s psychedelic-bass music diaspora,” he first made his mark in the late 1990s after moving to San Francisco and immersing himself in the underground scene. In those early years, he began blending live instruments and vocals with cutting-edge electronic production, a fusion that quickly became a hallmark of his unique sound. This innovative mix of organic and electronic elements set the stage for the distinctive sonic palettes and emotive atmospheres that define Random Rab’s music.
In 2001, Random Rab released his debut album, Epicycle, which garnered critical acclaim and established him as a rising star in the electronic music world. He has since released more than a dozen albums, continually evolving in style from downtempo bass music to more acoustic and ambient explorations. Notable releases include Visurreal (2011), which debuted in the Top 5 of iTunes’ electronic chart and reached the CMJ RPM Top 10, and Release (2013), which hit the Top 5 of the iTunes electronic charts. Later albums like Awoke (2015), Formless Edge (2017) and the more recent On Magnificence (2023) further showcase his ever-expanding soundscapes. Beyond studio albums, Rab’s music has been featured in films and multimedia projects for clients including National Geographic, Adobe and Google, underscoring the broad appeal and cinematic quality of his compositions.
Random Rab’s live performances are renowned for their immersive quality, often pairing hypnotic beats with intricate visuals and custom analog lighting to create a transformative experience. He has become a fixture at major festivals worldwide, from 25 years at Burning Man in Nevada to international gatherings like Lightning in a Bottle (California), Coachella (California), Shambhala (Canada), Boom (Portugal) and Ozora (Hungary).
As Vice noted, Rab is “one of the dance scene’s most solar-focused” artists, known for playing “tranquil, inspiring sunrise sets at festivals around the world for over a decade.” In Costa Rica, his dawn performances at Envision Festival became a beloved annual tradition for ten years running, earning him a reputation as a master of the sunrise set. He has also headlined unique events beyond the typical festival circuit. In 2012, Rab was a featured performer during three different solar eclipse gatherings, including Eclipse 2012 in Australia and Symbiosis eclipse events in Nevada and Oregon. He was also a headliner at The Great Convergence festival at the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience.
Even after decades on the scene, Random Rab continues to push musical boundaries through new projects and collaborations. He is currently developing an all-ambient project called Metonic Cycles, with a debut release expected in 2025. He also has collaborations in the works with CloZee, Dreamer’s Delight, New Thousand and LVDY. His work remains difficult to pigeonhole, blending genres and moods in service of a deeply emotive sound.
It’s a style that has led Grateful Web to dub him “the master of inventive experimentalism and emotion” for the way he balances innovation with heartfelt melody. With an unwavering commitment to creativity, Random Rab stands as a pioneering voice in electronic music, continually captivating listeners with new sonic explorations while staying true to the soulful, boundary-breaking spirit that has defined his career. A new full-length album is expected in late 2025.
