Erika Åberg: Knitting Workshop

Join best-selling author and knitwear designer Erika Åberg as she takes us on a knitting journey through the captivating landscapes of Shetland, the Hebrides, Gotland and Blidö, in her new book, Island Knitting, which is perfect for knitters seeking one-of-a-kind garments infused with a touch of coastal magic.

Join Erika on Sunday 2nd August at 3pm as she teaches us how to knit from one the patterns in her new book. Erika will guide us through two of the designs from the book- The textured colourwork of the Peat Vest (p. 49) or the slipped stitches of the Sjöblom Cowl (p 63).

The pattern for the Sjöblom cowl is suitable for beginners, and the method for the Peat Vest is slightly more demanding- the knitter needs to know how to follow a chart, cast on, bind off, knit and purl.

Erika will also show the Swedish way of knitting; holding the yarn in the left hand.

We will have a limited amount of wool and needles so it is advised that you try to bring your own if you can- for the beginners pattern, the Sjöblom Cowl, you will need 3-3.5 mm knitting needles with a 4-ply or one-ply tweed-style yarn, such as Soft Donegal (or the closest UK equivalent).

For the more advanced Peat Vest pattern you will need 4-4.5 mm knitting needles with a DK-weight wool (similar to Birlinn Yarn Company yarn).

This workshop is suitable for anyone aged 16+ looking to learn a new skill, and will take place in our art shop on the mezzanine level which is accessed via the back of the groundfloor.
