Have you ever been taken aback by the way someone responded to you when you were simply asking a question? Have you ever walked away from an encounter wondering, What just happened—and why?

How we speak to one another matters deeply. Even when conversations become difficult, emotional, or intense, our goal should be to communicate in a way that leaves the other person’s dignity intact.

Think about a time when you felt humiliated, diminished, dismissed, or misunderstood. What insight from that experience could you share that might help someone else navigate a difficult conversation while preserving both their own dignity and the dignity of the person in front of them?

Sometimes our most difficult encounters teach us the most about compassion, patience, and the power of our words.
