About this Event

Discover the fascinating world of beetles in this one-day beginner’s course, designed to build your confidence in field identification. Beetles are one of the UK’s most diverse groups of insects, with thousands of species occupying a wide range of habitats. This beginner course will focus on recognising common beetle families and a selection of distinctive species, helping you develop the skills needed to identify beetles in the field and begin recording your observations with confidence.
What will be covered during this course?

What is a Beetle? Learn about beetle anatomy, taxonomy, and the key features that distinguish beetles from other insects, alongside an introduction to the incredible diversity of UK beetles.

Beetle Families: Explore a range of common UK beetle families and discover the identifying characteristics, habitats, and ecological roles that help separate them in the field.

Beetle Field Techniques: Gain hands-on experience with practical survey methods, including sweep netting, beating, ground searching, and safe specimen handling techniques used for observing beetles in the field.

Distinctive Beetles: Develop confidence in recognising some of the UK’s more distinctive and easily identifiable beetle species by focusing on key visual features.

Recording Beetles: Learn how to document and submit beetle records using iRecord to beetle recording schemes and Local Environmental Record Centres, and understand how species records contribute to monitoring and conservation efforts.
