About this Event
Join Andrew Alpern, noted author, architectural historian, and one of the foremost experts on New York City’s apartment houses, for an engaging look at the work of Emery Roth. Alpern will highlight Roth’s most iconic buildings, including the San Remo, the Beresford, and the Ritz Tower, as well as a selection of his lesser-known, demolished, and never-realized designs. Roth’s career spanned an extraordinary range of styles—from the exuberant ornament of the Beaux-Arts tradition to the sleek modernity of Art Deco—and his work helped define the standard for urban luxury living in the early 20th century. His apartment houses not only transformed the skyline but also established the enduring association between elegance, craftsmanship, and the phrase “pre-war building.” This talk offers a chance to appreciate how Roth’s vision continues to shape New York’s architectural identity and the way we think about sophisticated residential living today.
