AfPP's Emergencies and Trauma symposium will feature expert speakers from leading trauma hospitals across the UK and a powerful guest talk from Daniel Biddle – the most seriously injured survivor of the 7/7 London bombings. This is more than just a learning opportunity - it’s a vital day for teams to come together, reflect, and explore the wide range of support systems available to them in high-pressure environments.

Info: Consultant in Anaesthesia and Prehospital Emergency Medicine // An overview of UK prehospital care delivery, transferrable human factors skills and overcoming challenges in delivering best practice in haemorrhage resuscitation in the prehospital environment. 1. Identify transferable lessons from military and prehospital emergency medicine.
2. Review the outcomes from the “Blood on Board” initiative.
3. Discuss human factors principles from high-pressure settings, to improve perioperative effective teamwork.

S2: In-situ simulation: is it worth the stress?

Info: Consultant in Anaesthetics & Major Trauma // This presentation outlines the integration of in-situ simulation into major trauma care at King’s College Hospital. We’ve collaborated extensively with internal stakeholders—including operating theatres, anaesthetists, surgical teams, the emergency department, the critical care unit, and the simulation team—and externally with the London Air Ambulance. We’ve also engaged with other trauma centres across London to share learning and promote regional improvement. Despite technical and IT infrastructure challenges, our focus has remained on developing non-technical skills and enhancing intra-team dynamics. The talk will reflect on operational challenges, the value of collaboration, and the significant rewards in trauma team performance and patient outcomes. // 1. Info: Clinical Director for Major Trauma // Major incidents/mass casualty events present a unique challenge to the NHS. In this session we will explore some of the lessons from incidents such as the London Bridge, Southport and Westminster attacks, and Grenfell Tower disaster and how they may help us plan for the future. // 1. Demonstrate effective triage strategies to prioritise patient care in emergency settings.
2. Identify key considerations and protocols during major incident responses.
3. Apply principles of self-care and peer support to maintain wellbeing in high-stress environments.

Info: Clinical Lead Pan London Major Trauma Psychology Network // This session presents the development of an integrated psychological care service for London’s major trauma patients and a comprehensive framework for responding to major incidents. Outcomes from the network’s first two years will be shared. With 30–40% of trauma patients experiencing long-term psychological disorders, the model focuses on early identification, prevention, and timely support. It also establishes rapid psychological response to major incidents, providing leadership to coordinate care for affected communities and professional responders. // 1. Understand the design and outcomes of London’s integrated psychological care model for major trauma patients. 2.Recognise strategies for early identification, prevention, and timely support to reduce long-term psychological disorders after trauma. 3.Explore how the frameworks can lead responses to major incidents, coordinating care for communities and responders.

Host: Daniel Biddle

Info: Daniel Biddle, the most seriously injured survivor of the 2005 London terror attacks, shares his powerful and deeply personal account of surviving the Edgware Road tube bombing. In this compelling session, Daniel reflects on the life-altering injuries he sustained - including the loss of both legs, an eye, his spleen, and hearing in one ear - and the extraordinary journey of physical and emotional recovery that followed.
