Old Millfieldian, Emad Shargi is a senior executive with over 30 years of experience in international business. From 2018 to 2023, however, Emad was wrongfully detained by the Iranian government on unfounded espionage charges. During his five years of captivity, Emad displayed remarkable resilience, defiance and personal leadership in the face of extreme adversity.

In this lecture, Emad will share his story and reflect on the values that sustained him throughout his imprisonment: integrity, optimism, empathy, and humility. He will explore how these principles not only enabled him to survive but also continue to shape his perspective on the human capacity to overcome profound challenges.
