Contribute to protecting the Critically Endangered European eel by becoming a trained citizen scientist in monitoring elver migration!
About this Event

The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) and project partners Medway Valley Countryside Partnership are recruiting volunteer citizen scientists to help monitor the migration of the European eel (Anguilla anguilla). Classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the recruitment of young eels into European rivers has rapidly declined over the last 40 years.

ZSL and partners have been monitoring the migration of eels into the Thames catchment since 2005. This year, we are continuing this important work and will be monitoring eel migration at Allington Lock on the River Medway.

W e need your help to:

  • Check eel traps
  • Count, measure and release any eels present
  • Upload the data onto the ZSL website, which contributes to our long term study as part of the Thames European Eel Project

Monitoring runs from the start of April to the end of September, so you can enjoy the summer on the river while collecting vital data to help us better understand European eels.

Training will be provided on Thursday 30th April at Allington Lock. This will involve an introduction to eels and their biology, the challenges they face, how to safely check eel traps in addition to counting, measuring and releasing any eels present, and lastly how to upload data onto the ZSL website.

PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU CAN ATTEND THE TRAINING SESSION IN PERSON AND YOU ARE ABLE TO COMMIT TO SURVEYS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER MONTHS (APRIL - SEPTEMBER).

YOU MUST BE AGED 18 OR OVER TO TAKE PART IN THIS PROJECT.

*More information will be circulated following registration, prior to the training.

If you have any questions, please contact Ella Carbery-Tarrant (ZSL, Project Officer) via: [email protected]
