Edward Byrne is Senior Organ Scholar at Magdalen College, Oxford where he regularly accompanies the world-renowned College Choir and Consort of Voices. Alongside his playing commitments, he trains the choristers and probationers in daily rehearsals, and directs the choirs on occasion. He is also an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford, where he is a finalist studying for a degree in Music.
Ed began his early musical education as a chorister at Westminster Abbey, where he sang in daily services as well as concerts and many prestigious events. After leaving Westminster Abbey in 2016, he was awarded a music scholarship to Loughborough Grammar School, where he took up the organ with David Cowen. During his studies at Loughborough, Ed was appointed organ scholar at St Mary’s Church, Nottingham from 2019 to 2021 under the direction of John Keys. There, he accompanied the choir regularly in services and performed in concerts as an organist, pianist, and continuo player.
Prior to his time in Oxford, Ed spent a year as Organ Scholar at Worcester Cathedral where he accompanied the Cathedral Choir on a regular basis, as well as being the principal accompanist to the newly formed Youth and Voluntary Choirs. During his time in Worcester, Ed studied the organ with Daniel Moult, Nicholas Wearne and Visiting Professor Martin Schmeding at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Ed is currently taught by Christian Wilson (repertoire), David Briggs (improvisation) and Will Dawes (conducting). He is active as a recitalist, having recently given recitals at Merton, Exeter, New and Keble Colleges in Oxford, as well as at Cheltenham College, Worcester Cathedral and Bradford Cathedral. He has performed as an accompanist with The Delius Singers, The Deitatis Consort and Players, and Arundel Cathedral Choir. Upcoming engagements include organ recitals at Westminster Cathedral and St Stephen’s Church, Bournemouth, as well as a performance of Maurice Duruflé’s Requiem with the Brighton16 and Worthing Philharmonic Orchestra.
