Edible & Medicinal Oaks of the Sierra Nevada: Harvesting, Processing, & Preparation Methods (Reno/Tahoe Area).
Oaks have been, and continue to be, an important source of food and medicine for millennia across the globe. That said, in the Sierra Nevada region they are of particular importance due to both their sheer abundance and diversity (where approximately 12 species can be found!). And although ALL oaks (Quercus spp. & relatives) have edible/medicinal virtues, some are much more preferred than others...for a variety of reasons. In this class we will explore in exhaustive detail 5 of the main species used for food & medicine in the region: CA black oak (Quercus kelloggii), valley oak (Q. lobata), interior live oak (Q. wislizeni), blue oak (Q. douglasii), and tan oak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus).
.
Through a combination of interactive lecture and hands-on activities we will delve into all aspects of the process, including: botany/I.D, ethical harvesting methods, acorn/bark processing, food/medicine preparation methods, historical & modern food/medicinal uses, ethnobotanical significance, while also covering any utilitarian potential. Both hot and cold leaching methods will be taught/utilized during class. This full immersion lecture/hands-on workshop is guaranteed to take your oak awareness and appreciation to a whole new level!

Frequently asked questions:
-So I paid the class fee via PayPal...am I now officially registered and on the roster? Yes, your spot in class is now secure. PayPal will not accept payments when a class is already sold out.
-Can I bring my dog? Sorry, absolutely NO pets (for a litany of reasons).
-Is it OK to bring my child? My 8-hour adult-level workshops are in no way suitable for younger children. Trust me: they would be bored to tears.
-I see that hundreds/thousands of people have clicked on "interested and/or going" for this event...what are your class size limits? Don't take Facebook numbers too seriously folks...I cap these sorts of workshops at around 25 students.
-When should I expect to receive directions, carpool info, and other more specific class details? As is clearly stated in the above class description: "Detailed directions and other more specific class info (including carpool networking) will be emailed out to the registered/paid students by September 14.
IMPORTANT NOTE: this message will be sent to the email associated with your PayPal transaction (and for some people this may not be their primary email)."
