Eddie Skuller sings the Ballads of Tom Waits
“Perfect matchup of songs and singer… it was like hearing the songs for the first time!"
Jersey City based singer Eddie Skuller performs a personal tribute to the songwriting of Tom Waits. Viewing Waits as the ultimate folk storyteller—with an unmatched understanding of character and melody—Skuller approaches the material with reverence, restraint, and emotional intelligence. Rather than attempting vocal mimicry, Skuller’s sensitive interpretations allow audiences to hear these classic songs anew, guided by a voice that is both expressive and uniquely his own.
This show features many songs from Tom Waits’ extensive catalog including the ageless treasures “I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You,” “San Diego Serenade,” “Ol’ 55,” “Downtown Train,” and “Jersey Girl.”
Eddie Skuller is accompanied by Joe McGinty (Psychedelic Furs, Ryan Adams, Rhett Miller) on keyboards and Jeremy Chatzky (Bruce Springsteen, Steve Earle, Laura Cantrell) on upright bass. Both musicians are masters of the New York music scene with whom Skuller has performed as a perennial guest singer with The Losers Lounge, an acclaimed tribute series that appears at Joe’s Pub and City Winery.
_______
"Skuller embraces the dark and moody but injects the tender promise of hope. Not an easy thing for most singers to pull off"
– Philadelphia Daily News
“Skuller’s vocal proves even more evocative than Waits’, richer and more fluid. It’s intimate and nostalgic and beautifully sad.” — Jim Testa, Constant Listener
“His lofty tenor is too original to pigeonhole... Eddie Skuller has the kind of voice people like to label. Comparisons range from Roy Orbison to George Michael to even Cher” – New York Times
