Prepare for a masterclass in hard bop brilliance. This edition of eat.sleep.jazz features host Teddy Dibble guiding us through a full album playback of Sonny Rollins’ towering 1956 masterpiece, Saxophone Colossus. Experience one of the greatest trio-and-horn sessions in jazz history in pristine high-fidelity.
Teddy will share a brief introduction exploring how this monumental album cemented Rollins as the definitive titan of the tenor saxophone. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio with an all-star quartet—including Tommy Flanagan on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Max Roach on drums—the session captures Rollins at the absolute peak of his melodic and rhythmic improvisational powers.
Our reference-grade stereo system is perfectly tuned to reproduce the incredible intimacy and impact of these acoustic recordings. You will feel the physical weight and warm, reedy bite of Sonny’s horn on the iconic calypso opener "St. Thomas," the smoky blues of "Blue 7," and the frantic pace of "B. Quick." Every drum rimshot by Max Roach and subtle piano chord from Flanagan is rendered with spectacular separation and lifelike depth. Grab a beverage and let Teddy take you inside the room for this legendary jazz milestone.
Join us every Wednesday night as C4RM presents another legendary Jazz album. Doors open at 6:30 PM | Intro & Listen at 7:00 PM
