Step into the origins of a jazz revolution. This edition of eat.sleep.jazz features host Teddy Dibble guiding us through a full album playback of Miles Davis’ foundational 1957 compilation, Birth of the Cool. Experience these historic, groundbreaking sessions in pristine high-fidelity.
Before dropping the needle, Teddy will share a brief introduction to explore how these tracks, recorded between 1949 and 1950, completely altered the trajectory of modern music. Moving away from the frantic pace of bebop, Miles Davis teamed up with genius arranger Gil Evans and a legendary nine-piece band to pioneer a relaxed, understated, and highly influential "cool jazz" sound.
Our reference-grade stereo system is perfectly tailored to reproduce the intricate, chamber-like arrangements of this historic nonet. The unique blending of French horn and tuba alongside Miles’ iconic, muted trumpet, Gerry Mulligan’s baritone sax, and Lee Konitz’s alto sax is rendered with breathtaking instrument separation and analog warmth. Grab a classic cocktail, or other favorite beverage, settle into the sweet spot, and let Teddy transport you back to the very moment jazz found its cool.
Join us every Wednesday night as C4RM presents another legendary Jazz album. Doors open at 6:30 PM | Intro & Listen at 7:00 PM
Your $10 Donation supports Center For Recorded Music 501(c)(3) and includes admission, complimentary snacks and beverages, and 1 complimentary adult beverage from a great selection of beer, wine, mixed drinks, and NA options.
