East Meets West: An Ikebana Workshop with California Native Plants

It's cherry blossom season in certain parts of the world! However, we got plenty of unique plants and beautiful flowers right here in California as well. A love of botany is meant to trancend borders. One way to usher in spring is through Japanese floral arrangements known as Ikebana.

Ikebana, a beautiful Eastern practice that incorporates organic materials beyond flowers, such as branches and plants with interesting aesthetics. Join us for a workshop with Japanese artist Hiromi Sutton to learn the basics of Ikebana using California native plants, including a simple tea ceremony.

Each student will take home their own finished creation! Plant materials will be provided. However, since everyone has different tastes, we ask participants to bring their own KAKI, which can be any vase, shallow bowl, or plate of your liking to place your arrangement.

This class is held indoors, but will include a short walk through the TPF gardens. We strongly encourage bringing comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and sun protection.

Hiromi Sutton is an artist hailing from Osaka, Japan with many years of experience in Ikebana. She has a background in design and fashion, thus has a keen eye for aesthetics. Other achievements include being the creator and designer behind popular, funky shoe line B by Aperire.
