"One of the strange joys of being in love with someone is how happiness ruined everything. No more courting the dark. I've always worn my own darkness and haven't tried-I hope I haven't tried-pretending that it doesn't exist. It feels odd to identify an experience because of how happy it made me feel. Except, of course, when it comes to love. But even then, even at love, I'm wary when its happiness comes skipping along into the writing. I've never understood the impulse to write out of happiness. I'm a happy person and a funny person, but I'm not a happy writer or a funny writer. I don't believe that a piece of writing has to be sad, but it does-at least for me-have to insist on acknowledging a shadow. It has to face something that a good cop would call evidence."

Michael Klein Michael Klein has written five books of poetry, including, “The Early Minutes of Without: New & Selected Poems.” His new book, “Happiness Ruined Everything: Essays” has just been published by Galileo Press. He is a five-time finalist and two-time winner of the Lambda Literary Award in poetry for his first book, “1990,” and for editing the seminal anthology, “Poets for Life: 76 Poets Respond to AIDS.” He is also the author of two books of autobiography, “Track Conditions,” a memoir about his time on the racetrack, and “The End of Being Known,” essays on sex and friendship. His work has appeared in Poetry, Paris Review, American Poetry Review, Tin House, Bennington Review, FENCE, LA Review of Books, Poets & Writers and many other publications. He has taught writing at Sarah Lawrence College, Binghamton University, Hunter College, the Fine Arts Work Center Summer Program and for more than 20 years as part of the MFA-in-Writing faculty at Goddard College. He is currently teaching remotely for the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and Poets House in NYC, as well as offering classes at the Jamestown Arts Center in Rhode Island, where he lives and works as a consultant and editor for people working on memoirs and poetry manuscripts.
Amy Arbus has published five books of photographs including the award-winning On the Street 1980-1990 and The Inconvenience of Being Born. Hilton Als of The New Yorker called The Fourth Wall her masterpiece. Her photographs have appeared in over one hundred periodicals such as The Village Voice, French Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and New York Magazine and The New York Times Magazine. Her advertising clients include Chiat/Day, Saatchi & Saatchi, New Line Cinema, Nickelodeon, and Marina Rinaldi. She has had thirty-eight one-person exhibitions around the world and is represented by The Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts and Mitchell Giddings Fine Arts in Brattleboro, Vermont. Amy Arbus has taught portraiture and storytelling with images at the International Center for Photography for twenty-five years. Her photographs are in the collections of The Morgan Library, The Museum of Modern Art, The New York Public Library, The National Theater in Norway, the Richard Avedon Foundation and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
